Instructions for week 7

To prepare for this week, please look at the homework first!

Important

CSES is down on Wednesday, October 21, 2026. The week 7 homework has a 24-hour extension, until Thursday, October 22, at 16:15 (local time in Finland). This Wednesday’s meeting uses Kattis; see the contest instructions below.

All course meetings start in hall U9 at 16:15. The contest runs from 16:20 to 17:50. During the second half of the meeting, help is also available in room U262.

Monday contest

On Monday we will have a solo contest. At the meeting, you will receive a piece of paper containing credentials for a pre-created CSES account assigned at random; its name will look like aalto26gm_NNN. Use only the account assigned to you for this contest, and do not use a personal CSES account.

The contest is available at cses.fi/670/list/. It will automatically open at 16:20 sharp, and it will end at 17:50 sharp.

A+ presents the exercise submission form here.

Wednesday contest

On Wednesday, October 21, we will have a team contest on Kattis because CSES is down. We will assign students to teams of two or three at random at 16:15, so please be in hall U9 on time.

Each team may use only one computer for programming and submitting solutions to Kattis. Additional computers are allowed only for reading task descriptions. We do not have printed copies of the tasks, so this lets team members read different tasks in parallel, just as they could with printed task statements.

One team member joins the contest using their own Kattis account and submits all solutions for the team through that account. If that team member does not have a Kattis account yet, they should create one before joining.

Join the practice contest on Kattis. The contest runs from 16:20 to 17:50 (local time in Finland).

Before the contest, make 100% sure that all AI assistance is disabled in your development environment, including generative-AI code completion. The usual course collaboration rules apply: work only with your assigned teammates and ask course staff for help.

The contest has 7 problems. Each team member gets 2 points for every problem that the team solves during the contest, up to 14 points. The usual Supercoder badge is awarded for solving the final problem, G: Jammed Gym.

After the contest, each team member must submit the form below separately in A+. Enter your team’s name exactly as it appears in the Team column of the Kattis scoreboard and report which problems your team solved. This name may differ from the Kattis login username. All team members should report the same team name and results.

Report only problems solved by your team during the contest, from 16:20 to 17:50 on October 21. Course staff can check these results against the Kattis scoreboard.

Your team’s name as shown on the Kattis scoreboard

Did your team solve A: Ballpark Estimate during the contest?

Did your team solve B: Crooked Dealing during the contest?

Did your team solve C: Dome Construction during the contest?

Did your team solve D: Feeding Seals during the contest?

Did your team solve E: Hat Stand during the contest?

Did your team solve F: Integral Pyramid during the contest?

Did your team solve G: Jammed Gym during the contest? This final problem also earns the Supercoder badge.

At the Monday meeting, you will also receive credentials for two pre-created CSES homework accounts assigned at random: aalto26hh_NNN for C++ and aalto26hh2_NNN for Python. If you miss the Monday meeting, you can still get these accounts at the Wednesday meeting. Use each account for its corresponding homework contest.
