Instructions for week 1

Getting started

  1. Complete the course registration in Sisu as usual.

  2. Read the basic course information in A+ carefully.

  3. Come to the first meeting in hall U9 on Monday, August 31, 2026, at 16:15 sharp.

Please prepare for the meeting as follows:

  • Have a pen and paper with you, or something equivalent such as an iPad with a note-taking app.

  • Have a laptop with you. There are power sockets in U9.

  • Make sure your laptop has internet access, for example through Eduroam.

  • Install a programming environment that you are comfortable with.

  • Make 100% sure that all AI assistance is disabled in your development environment.

All course meetings start in hall U9 at 16:15. The contest runs from 16:20 to 17:50. During the second half of the meeting, help is also available in room U262.

Monday contest

On Monday we will have a solo contest. At the meeting, you will receive a piece of paper containing credentials for a pre-created CSES account assigned at random; its name will look like aalto26am_NNN. Use only the account assigned to you for this contest, and do not use a personal CSES account.

The contest is available at cses.fi/650/list/. It will automatically open at 16:20 sharp, and it will end at 17:50 sharp. You will get points based on the number of tasks that you solve correctly during the contest. Once the contest is over, use the point submission form in this section and select the pre-created CSES account that was assigned to you. Your points will be calculated automatically.

Wednesday contest

On Wednesday we will have a team contest. We will assign students to teams at random at 16:15, so please be in hall U9 on time. Each team will receive a pre-created CSES account whose name will look like aalto26aw_NNN.

Use only the account assigned to your team for this contest, and do not use a personal CSES account.

The contest details will be added here soon. The contest will open at 16:20 sharp and end at 17:50 sharp. You will get points based on the number of tasks that your team solves correctly during the contest. Once the contest is over, use the point submission form in this section and select the pre-created CSES account assigned to your team. Your points will be calculated automatically.

Homework for week 2

To prepare for next week, please look at the week 2 homework!

At the Monday meeting, you will also receive credentials for a pre-created CSES homework account assigned at random; its name will look like aalto26bh_NNN. If you miss the Monday meeting, you can still get a homework account at the Wednesday meeting. Use the same assigned account for all CSES tasks in that week’s homework.
